Description

Tourism development and respect for the environment: the Belleville valley in Savoie as an example and perspective
Lecture by Corentin Hudry In the context of the Plan Neige, the Belleville valley was the setting for the development of three ski resorts: Les Menuires, Val Thorens and Saint-Martin-de-Belleville. All of them illustrate the stages of mountain tourism development: first, the difficult but necessary expropriation of land, then the development of winter sports infrastructures, and finally the emergence of environmental and landscape concerns. From "third-generation" resorts, the target of criticism and the object of tension over the use of the mountains, to "fourth-generation" resorts, how have we tried to reconcile the integration of winter sports, the mountain environment and land management? What are the political choices behind these developments, and how do they reflect reflections on the future of the mountains and their inhabitants?
